Bernier/Eliades Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition Brittle Connections, by Lillian Lykiardopoulou, on Thursday, April 6, 2023, 18:00 - 21:00.
Lillian Lykiardopoulou is a graduate of ASFA from Yale University and her work has been exhibited in New York, Italy and South Korea. This is the artist’s second solo show in Athens and her first with Bernier/Eliades Gallery.
In Brittle Connections the artist will present two sets of works, a series of wall-mounted ceramic sculptures and a series of site-specific sculptures in colored clay and porcelain.
Lykiardopoulou's works bear witness to her personal exploration of the possibilities of the material she is using, as well as her themes, which she draws from the urban landscape and her personal life. This series witness her evolution from a more conceptual art (Loop Ahead) into matter, based on an emotional processing of her observations, without the works losing their humour and sense of the absurd.
According to the artist the new exhibition, is divided this into three series or three starting points.
“The first series is about the grids in orange and it started by observing the grids that exist in the streets of Athens when construction projects are taking place.
I saw them as open wounds of the urban environment that remain permanently open and exposed and when they are closed (if), they open again. So, I made a series of grids in different sizes with different geometric shapes but with this orange colour as a common denominator that warns you of a state of constant waiting.
Again by observing elements in the city I was interested in some pipes in front of apartment buildings (very often in pairs) used to ventilate basements. I started a series of projects starting from these pipes that resembled periscopes. With the use of clay or porcelain these shapes became more organic and I often placed them in inter action.
The third series is about works I made with the sense of protection-defence and passive-aggression in mind. I was looking at animals with scales, exoskeletal insect shells, claws, cuticles, i.e. something hard protecting something soft and fleshy."

Η Γκαλερί Bernier/Eliades εγκαινιάζει την ατομική έκθεση Brittle Connections (Εύθραυστες Συνδέσεις), της Λίλλιαν Λυκιαρδοπούλου, την Πέμπτη 6 Απριλίου, 2023, 18:00 - 21:00.
Η Λίλλιαν Λυκιαρδοπούλου είναι απόφοιτος της ΑΣΚΤ με MFA από το Yale University και τα έργα της έχουν εκτεθεί στην Νέα Υόρκη, την Ιταλία και την Νότια Κόρεα. H έκθεσή της Brittle Connections είναι η δεύτερη ατομική της στην Αθήνα και η πρώτη της με την γκαλερί Bernier/Eliades.
Στην έκθεση αυτή, η καλλιτέχνιδα θα παρουσιάσει μια σειρά από επιτοίχια κεραμικά γλυπτά και μία σειρά από γλυπτά στο χώρο, σε χρωματισμένο πηλό και πορσελάνη.
Τα έργα της Λυκιαρδοπούλου μαρτυρούν την προσωπική της εξερεύνηση πάνω στις δυνατότητες του υλικού της, όπως και την θεματολογία της, την οποία αντλεί από το αστικό τοπίο και τον προσωπικό της βίο. Αυτός ο κύκλος έργων μαρτυρά την εξέλιξή της από την πιο εννοιολογική τέχνη (Loop Ahead) σε μια στροφή στην ύλη, που βασίζεται σε μια συναισθηματική επεξεργασία των παρατηρήσεων της, χωρίς τα έργα να χάνουν το χιούμορ και την αίσθηση του παράλογου και του ανοίκειου.
Όπως η ίδια λέει για την νέα της έκθεση:
«Χωρίζω αυτή τη δουλειά σε τρεις ενότητες ή τρεις αφετηρίες.
Η πρώτη ενότητα αφορά στα πλέγματα με το πορτοκαλί χρώμα και ξεκίνησε παρατηρώντας τα πλέγματα που υπάρχουν στους δρόμους της Αθήνας όταν γίνονται κατασκευαστικά έργα.
Τα έβλεπα σαν ανοιχτά τραύματα του αστικού περιβάλλοντος που μένουν μονίμως ανοιχτά και εκτεθειμένα κι όταν κλείνουν (αν) ανοίγουν κι αλλά. Έτσι, έφτιαξα μια σειρά από πλέγματα σε διάφορα μεγέθη με διαφορετικά γεωμετρικά σχήματα που όμως είχαν κοινό παρονομαστή αυτό το πορτοκαλί χρώμα που σε προειδοποιεί για μια κατάσταση διαρκούς αναμονής.
Παρατηρώντας πάλι στοιχεία στην πόλη μου κίνησαν το ενδιαφέρον κάποιοι σωλήνες που βρίσκονται μπροστά από πολυκατοικίες (πολύ συχνά σε ζεύγη) που χρησιμοποιούνται για να αερίζονται τα υπόγεια. Ξεκίνησα λοιπόν μια σειρά από έργα με αφετηρία αυτούς τους σωλήνες που προσομοιάζουν σε περισκόπια. Με τη χρήση του πηλού ή της πορσελάνης αυτά τα σχήματα έγιναν πιο οργανικά και πολλές φορές τα τοποθετούσα σε διά δράση.
Η τρίτη ενότητα αφορά έργα που έκανα έχοντας στο νου τις έννοιες προστασία- άμυνα και παθητικο-επιθετικότητα. Κοίταγα ζώα με φολίδες, κελύφη εξωσκελετικά έντομα, νύχια , επιδερμίδες, δηλαδή κάτι σκληρό που προστατεύει κάτι μαλακό και σάρκινο.»

BIOGRAPHY
Lillian Lykiardopoulou was born on 1981 in Athens, Greece, was awarded an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University, where she was an Onassis Foundation Scholar. She received the Niarchos Foundation Travel Fellowship in 2006 for a trip around the Black Sea. In 2004, she was awarded her BFA with Excellence from the Athens School of Fine Arts and nominated for a Greek State scholarship in 2003 based on her studio work.
Her solo show at Q-box Gallery, Athens took place in 2008. A selection of group shows that she took part in include the 2006 Armory show where she was represented by Jack Tilton Gallery, NY and the 72th Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean in Naples, Italy in September 2005 where she was selected to represent Greece in the painting section, as well as several other exhibitions in and around Greece since 2001. In 2007 Lillian Lykiardopoulou took part in a group show in the Gwangju Museum of Art in Korea and Blank Show in Shanghai, China. In 2003 she was a founding member of the Greek art group SAVRA and has taken part in their activities in Greece, Albania and Italy. She exhibited drawings and ceramics at Still-Point Space in Zurich in 2018 and took part in the group show Daily Lazy in Athens in 2017.
She lives in Athens, Greece.
