Bernier/Eliades Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition of the Peruvian artist Giancarlo Scaglia. This is the artist's second exhibition at the gallery. The artist will be present at the opening.
Giancarlo Scaglia (b. 1981, Peru) studied fine arts in Lima, where he developed his career as an artist.
Scaglia's work explores the relationship between history and memory, making reference to the armed conflicts from the 1980s and 1990s that took place in Peru. His interest in these events led him to question the origins of artistic avant-garde and to reflect on what it is that determines whether an action or gesture is considered "art".
Through his work, the artist examines that which no longer exists: the lives lost in those devastating conflicts and creates a "negative memorial" to commemorate the absence of collective memory, for the dead and the rule of law violated by the summary execution of many people. By giving tangible form to this void and creating a simulacrum of this absence, Scaglia memorializes and materializes a void that we cannot or will not see, but on which we inevitably stumble.

Η γκαλερί Bernier/Eliades παρουσιάζει την ατομική έκθεση ζωγραφικής του Περουβιανού καλλιτέχνη Giancarlo Scaglia. Αυτή είναι η δεύτερη έκθεση που πραγματοποιεί ο καλλιτέχνης στη γκαλερί. Ο καλλιτέχνης θα είναι παρών στα εγκαίνια.
Ο Giancarlo Scaglia (γεν. 1981, Περού) σπούδασε καλές τέχνες στη Λίμα, όπου και ανέπτυξε την καριέρα του ως καλλιτέχνης.
Το έργο του Scaglia ερευνά την σχέση ιστορίας και μνήμης, κάνοντας αναφορά στις ένοπλες συγκρούσεις από τη δεκαετία του '80 και του '90 που έλαβαν χώρα στο Περού. Το ενδιαφέρον του γι’ αυτά τα γεγονότα, τον έκανε να αμφισβητήσει την προέλευση των καλλιτεχνικών πρωτοποριών και να προβληματιστεί σχετικά με το τι είναι αυτό που καθορίζει αν μια ενέργεια ή μια χειρονομία θεωρείται "τέχνη".
Ο καλλιτέχνης μέσα από το έργο του δείχνει αυτό που δεν υπάρχει πια: τις ζωές που χάθηκαν σε εκείνες τις καταστροφικές συγκρούσεις και δημιουργεί ένα "αρνητικό μνημείο" για να τιμήσει την απουσία συλλογικής μνήμης, των νεκρών και του κράτους δικαίου που παραβιάστηκε με την συνοπτική εκτέλεση πολλών ανθρώπων. Δίνοντας απτή μορφή σε αυτό το κενό και δημιουργώντας ένα ομοίωμα αυτής της απουσίας, ο Scaglia μνημονεύει και υλοποιεί ένα κενό που δεν μπορούμε ή δεν θέλουμε να δούμε, αλλά πάνω στο οποίο σκοντάφτουμε, αναπόφευκτα.

Lives and works in Lima, Peru
He studied Visual Arts in Lima, where he developed his career as an artist. Scaglia’s work reinterpretates armed conflicts from the 80’s and the 90’s that took place in Peru. His interest for the recontextualization of this events in the arts brought him to question the origin of the artistic vanguards, and to reflect about what determinates whether an action or a gesture is
considered “art”.
